NCAA president Brand at Elon on Wednesday
NCAA President Myles Brand will take part in a
symposium about the past, present and future of intercollegiate athletics on
Wednesday at Elon University, according to an announcement at
ncaa.org.
Also slated to appear are Debbie Yow, Elon trustee
and Maryland athletic director; Frank Haith, basketball coach at Miami (FL);
and Joe Crowley, former president of the University of Nevada-Reno. The
event is free and open to the public.
The symposium is divided into three parts. Crowley,
author of �In the Arena: The NCAA�s First Century,� will reflect on the
birth of the NCAA and its evolution in �The Past: The History of College
Athletics.�
Brand will address current topics facing college
sports, including Native American mascots, gender equity, financing and
recruiting in �The Present: The NCAA and College Athletics Today.�
Brand, Haith and Yow will participate in a panel
discussion titled �The Future of College Athletics� and moderated by
Crowley.
The symposium will be broadcast on UNC-NC, a
multicast channel devoted to programming for and about North Carolina.
Pirate volleyball 2-0 after topping Georgetown
The East Carolina volleyball team won its second
match in as many tries, defeating Georgetown 3-1 Saturday in the second day
of the Jefferson Cup, according to a release from the ECU athletic media
relations department.
The Hoyas (1-4) hit .462 percent in the first game,
winning 30-22 before the Pirates won the next three games (30-22, 30-27,
30-20) to win the match.
Junior Kelley Wernert tallied 18 kills and 14 digs
to lead ECU while junior Mignon Dubenion added 16 kills and a career-tying
seven blocks. Senior Jaime Bevan registered 13 kills and five total blocks
in the win.
Jessica Buffum led the Hoyas with 19 kills and 13
digs. Jessica Hardy added 17 kills while Katie Nulty recorded 16 digs.
The Pirates will face tournament host Virginia
tonight at 7 p.m. in the final match of the Jefferson Cup.
National honor for Memphis soccer player
Memphis women's soccer player Shoko Mikami was named
the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Fox Soccer Channel female
player of the week, according to an announcement on the Conference USA
website.
Mikami, the 2005 C-USA offensive player of the year,
recorded hat tricks in a pair of Memphis road victories during the season's
opening weekend.
She posted three goals against Tennessee Tech, then
added three more and also picked up an assist in the team's 7-0 win at
Tennessee-Martin.
