O'Brien brings Archer aboard at N.C. State

Former LSU head coach Mike Archer will be defensive coordinator on Tom O'Brien's staff at N.C. State.

Archer was head coach at LSU from 1987 to 1990 and subsequently was Pittsburgh Steelers linebackers coach under Wolfpack alumnus Bill Cowher for seven years.

For the past four seasons, Archer has been defensive coordinator at Kentucky.

East Carolina will host N.C. State next season in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

Hokies' Foster gets long-awaited Broyles honor

Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster has been named the recipient of the 11th annual Frank Broyles Award, which goes annually to the nation's top NCAA Division I assistant football coach.

Foster had been a finalist for the award in 1999, 2001, 2005 and 2006.

Despite having to replace three of four starters along the defensive line, a starter at outside linebacker and two starters in the secondary from a team that ranked No. 1 in total defense in 2005, the 2006 Hokies were No. 1 nationally in total defense (219.4 yards per game), scoring defense (11.0 points per game) and pass defense (128.2 yards per game).

Carter named running backs coach at FSU

Florida State has announced that former Seminole and NFL running back Dexter Carter will join the FSU coaching staff as running backs coach. Carter starred for the Seminoles from 1986-89 and played seven seasons in the NFL.

Carter joins new FSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, new offensive line coach Rick Trickett and new wide receivers coach Lawrence Dawsey on coach Bobby Bowden's staff.
