Tide contract gets reaction from Iowa senator

After Nick Saban agreed to an eight-year, $32 million contract as football coach at Alabama, the Senate Finance Committee's chairman said he intends to keep an eye on colleges and how they are using their tax-exempt status, according to a USA Today report.

Sen. Charles Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, said in a statement colleges "need to justify" their expenses on coaching salaries and athletics facilities if they are to maintain that tax-exempt status.

LSU, Louisville QB's put on show for NFL scouts

A pair of junior quarterbacks enhanced their possible NFL draft status with bowl performances this week.

JaMarcus Russell threw for a career-high 332 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another TD in LSU's 41-14 Sugar Bowl win over Notre Dame.

Louisville's Brian Brohm completed 24 of 34 for 311 yards and directed two fourth-quarter touchdown drives in a 24-13 win over Wake Forest in the Orange Bowl.

Ducks knocked from unbeaten ranks by USC

Led by 19 points from Nick Young and dominating play from freshman center Taj Gibson, who had 18 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks, Southern California handed Oregon (13-1) its first loss of the season, 84-82 on Thursday night.

Gabe Pruitt added 18 points for the Trojans (12-4).
