Junior Smith involved in Cox commitment

A Fayetteville Observer story has confirmed an earlier Bonesville.net report that Harnett Central quarterback Rodney Cox has made an oral commitment to play football at East Carolina.

Cox told the paper he made the commitment Monday when East Carolina assistant coach Junior Smith visited him. Smith is a former East Carolina and E.E. Smith High School standout.

“Their program is going up,’’ said Cox. “They just finished second in their conference. I feel when I get there I can help them out.’’

Although there has been debate about what position he might play when he gets to college, Cox said the Pirates recruited him as a quarterback.

But he indicated that the position he plays at the next level was not an issue.

“It doesn’t matter to me as long as I can help the team,’’ he said.

Fayetteville Observer college football writer Sammy Batten rated Cox as the No. 2 college prospect in the Cape Fear region prior to the start of this season. By August, Cox had already received scholarship offers from East Carolina, Clemson, N.C. State and South Carolina, Batten reported.

Batten also writes about college football recruiting for Bonesville.net.

The versatile Cox finished this season with 1,559 yards rushing and 21 touchdowns.

WVU's Rodriguez says no to Bama's big bucks

After being pursued by the University of Alabama this week, West Virginia football coach Rich Rodriguez has announced that he plans on coaching at his alma mater for a long time, according to the WVU athletic website.

“The main reason I’m staying are the reasons to stay,” Rodriguez told a packed gathering inside the team meeting room at the Milan Puskar Center early Friday evening. “It certainly wasn’t the reasons not to go.”

Alabama reportedly offered $12 million over six years.

Rodriguez said he first had discussions with Crimson Tide athletic director Mal Moore in New York City on Tuesday and spent yesterday and today mulling over an offer. At no time did Alabama or any other school contact him before the end of the regular season.

The coach admitted that the generous support and encouragement he received from many West Virginia University supporters over the past few days was overwhelming.

Rodriguez was also appreciative of an athletic administration that is committed to excellence. WVU plans to extend Rodriguez's contract through 2014.

Boykin leaves Blue Devils hoops program

Sophomore forward Jamal Boykin has decided to leave Duke, school officials have announced. Boykin saw action in the first three games this season, averaging 1.3 points and 4.0 rebounds.

The Los Angeles native came down with mononucleosis in late November and has missed Duke’s last six contests. He returned to his California home last week and informed Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski of his decision to depart the school.
