Pirates face Houston if Marshall wins

A lot is on the line during the final week of the regular season in Conference USA football, according to the league's weekly football release.

Southern Miss can earn a trip to the C-USA Championship Game with a win over Marshall on Saturday (6:30 p.m. CST on CSTV). If the Golden Eagles lose, East Carolina will go to Houston to face the West Division champion Cougars.

On the same day in Houston, Southern Methodist meets Rice, with the winner guaranteed of ending a lengthy postseason drought with a trip to a bowl game.

Former teammates push Raye for MSU coach

In 1965, Jimmy Raye quarterbacked Michigan State to a college football national championship.

Forty-one years later, with the program struggling and in need of a new direction, some of Raye’s old teammates would like to see him get another chance at leading the Spartans to victory, according to a Fayetteville Observer report.

Organized by Clinton Jones, a former running back, and Hall of Fame defensive lineman Bubba Smith, the group has sent a letter to Michigan State president Lou Anna Simon and search committee head Mark Hollis urging them to hire Raye, a Fayetteville native, to succeed John L. Smith as head coach.

Smith, who had a 22-26 record in four seasons, was fired Nov. 1.

SMU's Wideman named academic player of year

Southern Methodist senior goalkeeper Matt Wideman has been named the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America University Division I Player of the Year, as voted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members.

Wideman was also named to the ESPN The Magazine University Division Academic All-America first team.

UAB senior forward Lukasz Kwapisz also earned a spot on the University Division First Team. Both Wideman and Kwapisz were selected to the Conference USA All-Academic Team.
