Yow taking leave of absence for treatment

N.C. State athletic director Lee Fowler and Wolfpack women's basketball coach Kay Yow have announced jointly that Yow will be taking a leave of absence from her coaching duties for an indefinite period of time. Associate head coach Stephanie Glance will serve as interim coach during this period, according to a release at NCSU's athletic website.

Coach Yow, 64 and a graduate of East Carolina, had a recurrence of breast cancer two years ago, 17 years after its original diagnosis in 1987. Following two years of treatment with dietary modification, oral hormonal therapies and radiation, Coach Yow's doctors recently detected progression of the disease. Treatment of the breast cancer at this time will require a combination of chemotherapy and newer targeted biologic therapies, which have begun this week.

Marshall's Bradshaw nabs C-USA weekly honor

Ahmad Bradshaw of Marshall rushed for a career-high 261 yards and five touchdowns on a career-high 40 carries in Marshall's 49-21 win over Texas-El Paso to earn Conference USA offensive player of the week honors. Bradshaw's 261 rushing yards represent the second-highest single game total in Marshall history, just one yard shy of Ron Darby's school record of 262 yards that was set against Western Carolina on Nov. 12, 1988.

Bradshaw's five rushing touchdowns are the most by an Thundering Herd running back since College Football Hall of Famer Jackie Hunt rushed for five TD's against Detroit Tech in 1940.

Senior cornerback Israel Route of Tulane, the defensive player of the week, posted eight tackles, including a career-high seven solo stops, broke up a pair of passes, and clinched the win with a forced fumble, fumble recovery and 42-yard return in the game's final minute to preserve a 10-9 win over Central Florida.

Freshman kicker Clark Fangmeier of Rice, the special teams players of the week, kicked a 40-yard field goal with three seconds left to lift the Owls over East Carolina 18-17. Fangmeier also converted his only extra point attempt, to run his total on the year to 29-of-29, the second-best total among freshmen kickers in the country.  With its fifth straight, Rice became bowl eligible.
