Garrard named AFC offensive player of week

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard has been named the AFC offensive player of the week league by NFL officials. He completed 16 of 22 passes for 229 and two touchdowns and led the Jaguars (7-5) to a 24-10 road win over the Dolphins in Miami last Sunday.

Garrard completed 72.7 percent of his pass attempts without an interception for a career-best 136.4 passer rating. The victory lifted Jacksonville to 7-5 and snapped the Dolphins' four-game winning streak.

In addition to his passing, Garrard ran six times for 24 yards including three first downs. He connected on a 16-yard touchdown pass to tight end George Wrighster for a 17-7 lead just before halftime. The former East Carolina star directed the club on two drives of more than 90 yards, both resulting in touchdowns.

Ten of Garrard's 16 completions resulted in first-downs as he improved to 9-5 overall as a starter, winning eight of his last 11 starts.

C-USA players of year: Kolb, Bunting, Higgins

Conference USA has announced its 2006 players of the year as selected by the league's 12 football coaches.

Houston senior quarterback Kevin Kolb was named offensive player of the year after leading the Cougars to the Conference USA championship. He has completed 67.7 percent (266-of-393) of his passes for 3,423 yards and a league-high 27 touchdowns with just three interceptions.

Defensive honors went to Tulsa senior linebacker Nick Bunting. A first team All-Conference USA selection, Bunting registered 65 tackles this season, along with 4.5 tackles for loss. He had a pair of sacks, three pass breakups and one forced fumble in helping the Golden Hurricane to eight victories and the school's first back-to-back bowl appearances since 1964-65.

The special teams player of the year went to Texas-El paso senior punt returner/kick returner Johnnie Lee Higgins. He should shatter the conference's single-season average for punt returns of 17.7, as he averaged 23.4 yards per return this season. Higgins has returned two punts for touchdowns. As a kick returner, Higgins averaged 15.3 yards on 18 returns. He earned first team All-Conference honors as a wide receiver and punt returner.

Miami elevates Shannon to head coach

The Miami Herald has reported that Miami defensive coordinator Randy Shannon accepted the Hurricanes' football coaching job Thursday, according to several well-placed university sources.

Shannon, 40, a Miami native, becomes only the sixth black head coach in Division I-A football.

Shannon, also the linebackers coach, graduated from Miami Norland High and from UM in 1989. He was a member of the Hurricanes' 1987 national championship team and was an 11th-round draft choice of the Dallas Cowboys in 1989.

Shannon was a Dolphins defensive assistant in 1998 and 1999 before becoming Miami's linebackers coach in 2000.
