Thundering
Herd shocks Hokies
A 59-58 upset loss to Marshall
(4-8) dropped Virginia Tech to 9-4 on Saturday in Huntington, WV. The
Thundering Herd got 20 points from Mark Dorris, which held on after
building a 38-17 advantage.
Dorris got 17 points in the first half.
The Hokies had a 22-12 run in the second half and led 56-55. Zabian Dowdell
paced Virginia Tech with 17 points but his final shot was rejected by
Marshall's Jean Francois BroGrebe.
Costner leads Wolfpack to rout of UNCW
N.C. State forward Brandon
Costner scored 17 points and grabbed 19 rebounds as N.C. State
rolled past UNC Wilmington to a 72-51 win in Raleigh on
Saturday.
A crowd of 14,068 saw the Wolfpack
(9-4) hit 52 percent of its field goals while limiting the Seahawks (3-7) to
just 29.5 percent.
Boston College kings for a day in Queen City
Even with an interim coach
and a walk-on kicker, Boston College (10-3) managed to edge Navy
25-24 in the Meineke Bowl in Charlotte on Saturday. Steve
Aponavicius kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired to give
defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani a win as he filled in for
Tom O'Brien, who left the Eagles program for N.C. State.
Navy (9-4) lost a fumble at its 40-yard
line with 1:43 left to set up BC's winning score.
Aponavicius, a soccer player, replaced
suspended kicker Ryan Ohlinger at midseason.
Former East Carolina assistant Jeff
Jagodzinski will be taking over the head coaching duties at BC.
In other bowl action, Texas topped Iowa
State 26-24 in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio and Georgia was a 31-24 winner
over Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta as the Bulldogs
rallied from an 18-point deficit.
