Noah Brindise has resigned after two seasons serving as UNLV football's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach to go into private business, Rebels coach Mike Sanford announced Tuesday.

"I enjoyed my time at UNLV but I now have the opportunity to return to Florida and raise my family in our home state," Brindise said. "I appreciate the opportunity Mike Sanford gave me and know that success is in the near future for this program."

The Rebels were 2-10 in 2006 with a 10-game losing streak sandwiched between wins over Idaho State and Air Force.

Brindise, a former quarterback at the University of Florida, came to UNLV after stints at East Carolina and the Washington Redskins of the NFL.

"We thank Noah for his two years of hard work here and wish him the best in his career," Sanford said. "Our search for a replacement will begin immediately. Whether it will be an offensive coordinator or a quarterbacks coach will depend on who that person is."

South Florida has been preparing for Saturday's Papajohns.com Bowl against East Carolina without a top defensive player, according to a St. Petersburg Times report.

Senior strong safety Jeremy Burnett, who started all 12 games in 2006 and ranked fifth on the team with 71 tackles, was ruled ineligible. USF didn't specify a reason, but Monday, coach Jim Leavitt said one player might not play because of failing a class.

With Burnett out, the Bulls will move sophomore Carlton Williams, who started eight games at free safety, to strong safety. Danny Verpaele will start at free safety.

Detroit held on for a 62-57 win over East Carolina in the second day of the Caribbean Classic at the Moon Palace Resort in Cancun, Mexico.

The game came down to free throws in the final minute, as the last ten points of the contest were scored from the charity stripe.

Detroit improves to 2-9 on the year while the Lady Pirates fall to 4-8 on the season with one game remaining before heading into Conference USA play, according to a report from the ECU athletic media relations department.

ECU's Cherie Mills led all scorers with a season-high 24 points, including 8-for-12 from the free throw line. LaCoya Terry also finished in double figures, scoring 10 and adding seven rebounds. Nicole Days had a team-high nine rebounds for ECU.

The Lady Pirates shot 31 percent for the game, while the Titans shot 34.5 percent. ECU outrebounded the Titans 47-42.

East Carolina will enjoy a nine-day break for the holidays before hosting Long Island on Dec. 29.
