Cavanaugh joins Pirate baseball staff

Former East Carolina baseball standout Brian Cavanaugh has been named director of baseball operations at ECU by Pirates coach Billy Godwin, according to a release from the university's athletic media relations office.

The Monroe, CT, native and four-year letter winner helped the Pirates to four NCAA Regional appearances (2002-05), one Super Regional (2004), a combined 163-86-2 record and became the third recipient of the honorary No. 23 jersey which was the number worn by ECU Hall of Famer and former head coach Keith LeClair, now deceased, throughout his coaching and playing career.

"We are ecstatic about having Brian join our staff," Godwin said. "Brian is another former player that has great devotion and loyalty to East Carolina University. His energy and work ethic will be a positive influence in our program."

Lady Pirates lose opener in Cancun to Pitt

Jessica Slack’s 17 points were not enough as 22nd-ranked Pittsburgh rallied for the 70-53 win over East Carolina in the first day of the 2006 Caribbean Classic at the Moon Palace Resort in Cancun, Mexico. With the win, Pitt remains unbeaten at 11-0 while ECU falls to 4-7 on the year.

Slack tied her season-high in scoring. Mills added 12 points and seven rebounds. The Lady Pirates were held to 32.7 percent shooting from the field while Pitt shot 46.6 percent.

Derek Dooley leaving Dolphins for La. Tech

Louisiana Tech president Dr. Dan Reneau has named Derek Dooley the 31st head coach in Bulldog history, according to the university's athletic website.

Dooley, son of former Georgia head coach and athletic director Vince Dooley, comes to Louisiana Tech after serving as an assistant coach for the Miami Dolphins the past two years.

Dooley, who will continue his responsibilities as the Dolphins tight ends coach through the end of the season, is very familiar with the college and high school football scene in the South. He served as an assistant coach at LSU under Nick Saban for five years and as the wide receivers coach at Southern Methodist from 1997 through 1999.

Tech athletic director Jim Oakes said Dooley will sign a five-year contract in the range of $300,000 to $400,000 per year.
