Grobe gets national recognition for coaching

Wake Forest's Jim Grobe has been chosen as the national coach of the tear by The Sporting News and CBS Sportsline, according to a release on the ACC website.

Grobe, the unanimous 2006 ACC coach of the year, has also been voted the AFCA Region 1 coach of the year, a finalist for the Eddie Robinson coach of the year award by the Football Writers Association of America and the Bobby Dodd coach of the year award.

The Demon Deacons were picked to finish last in the ACC's Atlantic Division in the preseason and lost their starting quarterback, starting running back and a starting defensive end early in the season.

Wake Forest responded by winning a school-record 11 games and its first ACC championship since 1970 to represent the ACC in the Orange Bowl.

Wake Forest has posted the biggest turnaround in college football this season by winning seven more games in 2006 than in 2005. The 2005 Deacons went 4-7 and the 2006 Deacons are currently 11-2.

ECU women's soccer duo receives honors

East Carolina women's soccer players Amber Campbell and Sarah Kirkley have both received recognition for their stellar play throughout the 2006 season.

Campbell was named Soccer Buzz third team All-South and was also honored as the N.C. all-state goalkeeper after posting a 0.73 goals against average. Midfielder Sarah Kirkley was named to the Soccer Buzz All-South freshmen team.

Campbell has received numerous awards throughout the 2006 campaign. Most notably, she was named Co-National Player of the Week during the last week of the regular season, while also being named to the Soccer Buzz elite team of the week.

Kirkley, a Raleigh native, led the team in assists with 10. On a national scale, Kirkley was ranked 16th in the nation in assists per game. Kirkley was also named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team.
