NCAA's Brand calls for 80 percent grad rate
NCAA president Myles Brand called for Division I
athletics programs to graduate 80 percent of their student-athletes in
remarks this week at a symposium hosted by Elon University, according to a
release at
ncaa.org.
Based on elevating the bottom 15 percent of the
teams to be more in line with the rest of the Division I membership, it
should have a result that yields an 80 percent average Graduation Success
Rate overall," Brand said. "Four out of five student-athletes graduating;
that would be remarkable!
In fact, I am setting that an 80 percent
Graduation Success Rate for all Division I student-athletes as a
meaningful, realistic goal for academic reform.
The current Division I GSR is 76 percent. That rate
measures graduation rates for all student-athletes, including transfers. The
annual study mandated by the federal Student Right-to-Know Act does not
measure transfers.
Brand's remarks came as part of a symposium on the
past, present and future of intercollegiate athletics. Other participants
included Joe Crowley, author of In the Arena/The NCAA's First Century;
Miami (FL) basketball coach Frank Haith; and Debbie Yow, athletic director
at Maryland.
ECU
women's soccer gets regional ranking
East Carolina women's soccer team is ranked 14th in
the Southeast Region by Soccer Buzz, the exclusive collegiate publication
for women's soccer, according to an ECU athletic media relations release.
ECU (3-1) has three straight shutouts against
in-state opponents Campbell, Western Carolina and Charlotte.
The ranking is the highest for ECU since 1999, when
they were ranked 10th going into the final week of the season. That team
finished 11-5.
Florida State (3-0), is currently ranked first in
the Southeast Region followed by North Carolina (4-1), Duke (3-1), Florida
(2-1-1) and Wake Forest (3-1). Charlotte (2-1-1, 13th) and N.C. State
(3-0-1, 15th) round out the six North Carolina schools ranking in the
top-15.
The Pirates have scored eight goals this season,
each by a different player. Five of the goals were scored by freshmen. ECU
has also yet to allow a goal during regulation in all four of its contests.
Goalkeeper Amber Campbell has played in all but 17
minutes of one game, tallying two shutouts and combining with Jen Kurowicki
on the third.
Soccer Buzz recognizes ECU's Nicole Moore
Soccer Buzz, the exclusive collegiate publication
for women's soccer, has named East Carolina defender Nicole Moore to the
Soccer Buzz Elite Team Of The Week, according to an announcement on the
Conference USA website.
The Pirates shut out three consecutive in-state
opponents, bringing their record to 3-1-0 on the season. ECU blanked both
Western Carolina and Charlotte, 2-0.
Moore, a sophomore from Springdale, NC, tallied one
assist during the second game of the season, a 5-0 win over Campbell.
"Nicole Moore made two huge plays in our win over
Charlotte, clearing one ball out from the sideline and making a potential
goal saving slide tackle," said Pirate head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "Nicole
works hard all the time and especially during practice. She is a very driven
player. All of our defenders have been playing very well together the entire
season."
As a freshman, Moore was named to the All-Conference
USA Freshman Team after she started all 21 games for ECU. Moore was tied for
third on the team in assists with three. During last year's C-USA
Tournament, Moore played a big role in holding No. 2 Southern Methodist
scoreless.
Pirates get volleyball sweep over UNCW
East Carolina swept intra-state rival UNC-Wilmington
in volleyball on Wednesday night at Minges Coliseum.
Kelley Wernert led the Pirates with 13 kills while
Mignon Dubenion recorded 10, according to an ECU athletic media relations
release.
The Pirates won in convincing fashion, picking up
their first shutout win of the season, 30-14, 30-25, 30-18.
With the victory, ECU improves to 4-3 on the season,
2-2 at home. UNC Wilmington drops to 5-4. The outcome marks the Pirates'
10th straight win over the Seahawks.
