NOTES FROM ECU AND BEYOND...
Compiled from staff
and electronic reports
ECU-bound Herlocker paces Charlotte Catholic
East Carolina commitment Ben
Herlocker of Charlotte Catholic is one of five great running backs in
the Charlotte Observer's high school coverage area whose team were still
in the playoffs going into Friday night's games.
Herlocker rushed for 359 yards and six
touchdowns two weeks ago, falling eight yards shy of the county record for
rushing yards in a game and tying the county mark for touchdowns in a game,
according to an Observer feature by Langston Wertz.
At Catholic, Herlocker, the MVP of the
2005 N.C. 3AA championship game, is the perfect player for the Cougars'
Wing-T offense, his coach said.
"He's a special kid," Jim Oddo said.
"But in order for him to do things, the offensive line has to work. If they
can get him to the linebackers or the safeties, he's a load. Just get him a
little bit, and he'll take a lot."
Miami enters search mode for football coach
Miami football coach Larry
Coker was fired Friday morning, according to a Miami Herald
report, ending a 12-year career at the university, six of them
as head of the program.
His dismissal was announced at an 11
a.m. news conference on campus. He will coach the team in a bowl game if the
Hurricanes receive an invitation.
Speculation immediately focused on a
replacement. Greg Schiano, a former Hurricanes defensive coordinator who has
turned a previously inept Rutgers program into a national power, is believed
to top the school's wish list.
Coker, 58, led the Hurricanes to a
national championship his first season as head coach in 2001. He came within
one penalty flag of a second national championship in 2002 when he lost to
the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Fiesta Bowl.
Since those national title game
appearances, the program has slipped dramatically. Thursday night's 17-14
victory over Boston College in front of a small crowd in the Orange Bowl
evened the Hurricanes' regular season record at 6-6.
Coker's record as head coach is 59-15.
Although under contract to Rutgers,
Schiano is considered the top contender. Other speculation centers on
Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez, 59, who is close friends with UM
President Donna Shalala and turned down the UM head coaching job when Butch
Davis left in 2001.
Alvarez finished his coaching career at
Wisconsin in 2005. His record from 1990 to 2005 was 108-70-4.
Others whose names have surfaced
include Steve Kragsthorpe of Tulsa, Mike Leach of Texas Tech, Gary Patterson
of Texas Christian, Rich Rodriguez of West Virginia and Miami defense
coordinator Randy Shannon.
Boston College out of ACC title contention
Well, at least it won't be a bowl trip
to Boise for the Boston College Eagles, according to a Boston Globe column
by Bob Ryan.
That may not be much of a consoling
thought, but it's about the best anyone can come up with after the Boston
College Eagles eliminated themselves from ACC championship consideration by
losing a 17-14 decision to Miami at the decrepit Orange Bowl on Thursday
night.
The Eagles needed a two-week
convergence of events to get themselves to Jacksonville for next week's ACC
Championship game against Georgia Tech. With two weeks remaining in the
regular season, BC's task was to defeat Maryland and Miami while hoping Wake
Forest would lose to Virginia Tech and Maryland.
The Eagles' dream remained viable last
week when they smacked around the Terps and Wake stumbled against Virginia
Tech. But things went poof when BC could not hold a 14-3 lead over Miami
entering the final minute of the first half following a 22-yard DeJuan
Tribble interception return.
