Pirates add Lugo to 2008 baseball class

Rigoberto Lugo from the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy has signed a national letter-of-intent to play baseball at East Carolina in 2008, Pirates baseball coach Billy Godwin has announced.

A native of Caguas, Puerto Rico, and the first-ever Pirate signee from the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy, Lugo will join Derrick Conatser, Cameron Freeman, Matt Hancock, Dustin Harrington, Daniel Holder, Matt Laney, Seth Maness, Brad Mincey, Sthil Sowers and Trent Whitehead as members of the 2008 signing class.

"We are excited about the signing Rigoberto Lugo," said Godwin. "He is a power throwing right-handed pitcher with a hard, late breaking ball that has also been clocked at 92 mph. Lugo is a tremendous athlete who has also shown the ability to play in the outfield and will be a great fit for our program."

The Pirates, who begin spring practice on Jan. 10, 2007, will host Liberty in the season opener on Feb. 9 on Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium at 3 p.m.

VCU prevails over ECU in women's hoops

A season-high 25 points from Jasmine Young was not enough against Virginia Commonwealth on Friday night, as the Rams held off a late run by the East Carolina women's basketball team to defeat the Lady Pirates, 78-73.

The victory improved VCU to 5-0, while East Carolina fell to 1-4, heading into its first home game.

The Lady Pirates open the home portion of the 2006-07 season today, hosting Florida A&M in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum at 1:00 p.m.

Tulsa gains momentum for postseason trip

The Friday afternoon sun was setting on Tulsa's 22 seniors, according to a Tulsa World report, but the group's impact on the Golden Hurricane football program is not over.

While dusk settled on Skelly Stadium following a 38-3 win over Tulane, Coach Steve Kragthorpe said TU's future has been brightened by these players playing their final home game.

"They have put Tulsa football back on the map," Kragthorpe said on a stadium PA system. "They've won 29 games in four years. They've won 17 games in the last two years."

The coach paused for applause before adding, "We're going to get 18."

An 18th victory would come in a bowl game. The site could be known by Monday, with the Dec. 23 Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, TX, or the Dec. 22 New Orleans Bowl being early frontrunners.
