Fighting Irish receiver catches Cubs offer

The Chicago Cubs have announced that right-handed pitcher Jeff Samardzija has agreed to a five-year Major League contract with club options for the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

Samardzija will focus solely on his baseball career. The Valparaiso, IN, native was also a star wide receiver on the Notre Dame football team. He led the Fighting Irish with 78 receptions and 1,017 receiving yards in 2006.


"Bowden Bowl" relocates to Labor Day

Clemson and Florida State will open their 2007 seasons on Labor Day (Sept. 3) in an 8 p.m. game on ESPN.

The Seminoles are coached by Bobby Bowden; the Tigers by his son, Tommy Bowden.

The game marks the third straight Labor Day opener for the Seminoles, who matched up against Miami in the previous two.


No ramblin' for Georgia Tech's Gailey

Chan Gailey, Georgia Tech's head football coach since 2002, has announced that he will remain at Tech.

Gailey had been under consideration by for the coaching position of the Miami Dolphins, the organization from which he was hired by Georgia Tech on Dec. 29, 2001.

He spent the 2000 and 2001 seasons as the Dolphins' offensive coordinator. The Dolphins introduced Cam Cameron as coach on Friday.

Gailey led Tech to a 9-5 record, the ACC Coastal Division title and a berth in the Toyota Gator Bowl in 2006. The Jackets return 17 starters from last year's squad that earned the school's 10th consecutive bowl berth.
