McFadden leads
Independence into title game
Charlotte Independence, which
features East Carolina commitment Darryl McFadden at quarterback, is in
position to win an unprecedented seventh straight state championship because
of an offense that was relentless and razor sharp, according to a Charlotte
Observer report.
The Patriots removed the drama
early in a 49-23 rout of rival Butler in the NCHSAA 4-AA semifinal Saturday
in front of about 20,000 fans at Memorial Stadium.
McFadden threw for four
touchdowns and ran for a fifth. He was 15-of-20 passing for 185 yards. He
also ran nine time for 50 yards.
Independence scored touchdowns
on seven of eight possessions. The victory was Independence's 107th in a
row, the second-longest streak in U.S. history.
The Patriots play Durham
Riverside in the title game at Duke next Saturday.
Bearcats bound for new bowl in Toronto
The University of
Cincinnati on Sunday accepted an invitation to play in the first
International Bowl against Western Michigan of the Mid-American
Conference on Jan. 6 at the Rogers Centre (SkyDome) in Toronto,
according to a Cincinnati Enquirer report.
The game will be played at
noon and will be telecast on ESPN2.
The Bearcats will be making
their first bowl appearance as a member of the Big East Conference after
finishing the regular season with a 7-5 record, 4-3 in the league.
This will be the second time
UC has played in an inaugural bowl game. The Bearcats also played in the
first Humanitarian Bowl in 1997 in Boise, ID, defeating Utah State, 35-19.
The bowl invitation is UC’s
sixth since 1997. The Bearcats have played an opponent from the MAC in all
but two of those bowl games.
Western Michigan finished 8-4
during the regular season, 6-2 in the MAC, placing second in the West
Division. The Broncos led their conference in total defense and were ranked
sixth nationally in rushing defense, allowing 71.92 yards per game. They
lead the nation in interceptions with 22.
UC leads the series against
Western Michigan, 2-0, but the two schools have not met in football since
1980.
