UTEP's
Higgins named AFCA All-American
Texas-El Paso senior
Johnnie Lee Higgins, Jr., has been named to the American Football
Coaches Association 2006 All-America team.
The AFCA has selected an
All-America team since 1945. The AFCA's Division I-A All-America selection
committee is made up of three head coaches from each of the AFCA's nine I-A
districts.
Higgins is one of only two
wide receivers selected to the team, joining Georgia Tech's Calvin Johnson.
He is second in the nation in receiving yards this season (109.9 ypg), and
has caught 13 touchdown passes. He is also third in the country in
all-purpose yards (156.1 ypg). Higgins led Conference USA in receiving and
all-purpose yards this season.
Higgins ended his time at UTEP
as the school's all-time leader for receiving yards (3,218) and receiving
touchdowns (32). He is tied for 20th on the all-time NCAA list for receiving
touchdowns (32).
Higgins is the only Conference
USA player on this year's AFCA All-America team. He is the first Miner to
earn All-America distinction since tight end Brian Natkin, a unanimous
selection in 2000.
Memphis thumps Herd in
C-USA hoops opener
Robert Dozier scored 16 points
and Chris Douglas-Roberts added 14 to lead host Memphis to a 78-59 win over
Marshall on Monday night in the Conference USA opener for both teams.
Memphis (6-1) held the
Thundering Herd to 33 percent shooting in its fourth straight win.
Joey Dorsey had four of the 11
shots blocked by Memphis. Dorsey also had four steals and 13 rebounds.
C-USA names top cross country performers
Stephen Samoei of
Texas-El Paso and Rachael Forish of Southern Methodist have been
named Conference USA male and female cross country athletes of
the year as voted upon by the league's cross country coaches.
Samoei, a junior, becomes the
first C-USA male cross country runner to repeat the honor since Amos
Kipygeon of Tulane did so in 1997 and 1998. Samoei also became C-USA's first
two-time cross country All-American last month when he finished 13th at the
NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, IN.
Forish established herself as
one of the top cross country runners in SMU history during the 2006 season.
The junior became one of three cross country runners to earn All-American
accolades for SMU. She finished 35th at the NCAA Championships with a 6K
time of 21:24.5 to earn this honor.
