Rice baseball opens with shutout victory

Five Rice pitchers combined to hold Central Missouri to no runs on three hits, and sophomore catcher Adam Zornes gave the No. 1-ranked Owls all the offense they would need with a two-run first inning homer on the way to a 5-0 victory on the opening day of the season for both teams Saturday afternoon at Reckling Park in Houston.

Tar Heels laid Lowe by inspired Wolfpack

Sidney Lowe improved his winning streak over North Carolina to three games on Saturday at the RBC Center, leading his alma mater to an 83-79 upset over the No. 3 Tar Heels, the highest ranked team a first-year Wolfpack coach has ever beaten.

Lowe, who helped State to back-to-back victories over the Heels as a senior guard under coach Jim Valvano en route to the 1983 NCAA Championship, became the first Wolfpack coach to beat UNC-Chapel Hill in his first attempt since Les Robinson did it in 1991.

State got exceptional leadership from senior guard Engin Atsur, who had 12 points and 10 assists. The Wolfpack also got a career-high 21 points from sophomore Courtney Fells, 17 points from center Ben McCauley, 16 points from Gavin Grant and 15 points and 11 rebounds from Brandon Costner.

Ex-NFL QB Leaf coaching college golf team

Ryan Leaf will serve as golf coach at West Texas A&M this spring. Leaf takes over for Jeremy Hodges, who has left the program to pursue other professional opportunities.

Leaf, who joined the WTAMU football staff last spring after a lackluster career as an NFL quarterback, helped guide the Buffalo program to an 11-2 record and its second consecutive Lone Star Conference championship.
