Knife trouble nothing new at N. Colorado
The Greeley (CO) Tribune has reported that Mitch
Cozad isn't the first Northern Colorado football player kicked off the team
this year
for a fight with a teammate involving a knife.
In a Feb. 23 fight at a party west of the UNC
campus, former wide receiver Cory Sleeth brandished a knife after getting
hit over the head with a bottle from behind by teammate Kurt Hout.
When another teammate, walk-on linebacker Jimmy
Paquette, reached to pull the knife from Sleeth, Paquette's finger was cut,
requiring three stitches.
By the time the knife was taken from Sleeth, Hout
had run out of the house and the knife was not brandished again.
But because of their actions and the ensuing events
that night involving teammates Jens Lundeen and Kacie Wolfe Sleeth, Hout,
Lundeen and Wolfe were kicked off the team a couple weeks later.
Sleet said Wolfe and Lundeen broke out a window of
Hout's car, and later paid him back for the damage.
Details of the incident were not revealed earlier
because there was no police report filed. UNC officials declined to comment
on the reason all four players were dismissed.
In a development related to the recent stabbing of
Northern Colorado's starting punter, police are looking for a second
suspect.
Witnesses reportedly saw someone standing near
Cozad's car Monday night when punter Rafael Mendoza was stabbed in his
kicking leg outside his residence.
South
Carolina QB will rejoin team
A charge against South Carolina quarterback Blake
Mitchell was dropped Friday by a security worker at a Greene Street bar who
accused Mitchell of punching him in the face during an early morning
incident this week, according to a report in The State newspaper of
Columbia, SC.
In exchange, Mitchell agreed he would no longer go
to Pavlovs, where the altercation took place at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday.
USC coach Steve Spurrier held Mitchell, who was
suspended indefinitely following his arrest, out of Saturday's game with
Wofford, but said the quarterback will return to the team next week.
Pirate volleyball sweeps Grambling State
East Carolina swept Grambling State in the final
match of the 2006 East Carolina Classic on Saturday afternoon, according to
an ECU athletic media relations release. The win marks ECUs fifth shutout
of the season, and the second of the tournament. The Pirates improve to 8-6
on the year while Grambling State falls to 3-9.
Mignon Dubenion and Kelley Wernert each tallied 13
kills in the win. Jaime Bevan recorded six kills and nine blocks while
setter Hannah Fenker registered 39 assists, five digs and two blocks. Libero
Trish Monroe had a team-high 12 digs.
Bevan and Dubenion were named all-tournament.
