Mountaineers have some things to work on
It would be hard for Rich Rodriguez not to be
satisfied with the way his West Virginia football team has begun the season,
according to a Charleston (WV) Gazette report.
After all, notes Gazette reporter Dave Hickman, this
is a coach who has repeatedly said that satisfaction will come for him if
the Mountaineers win all their games by one point. With Thursday night�s
45-24 romp over Maryland, WVU has won the first three by slightly more than
that � combined, the margin is 102 points, or 34 per game.
But there have been flaws � some noticeable, some
not. None of the miscues is being overlooked by Rodriguez.
In the Thursday night win over Maryland, the Terps
outscored the Mountaineers 24-17 over the final three quarters. And there
have been penalties and defensive inconsistencies, the kind that could haunt
the Mountaineers the first time they find themselves in a close game.
�We got off to such a great start and we had some
turnovers that helped us get the lead," Rodriguez said. "But I wasn�t
comfortable because I knew they were going to come back because they�ve got
good players. It wasn�t going to be a situation where suddenly the game�s
over. We knew we had to keep playing and I was a little bit disappointed we
didn�t keep progressing and keep attacking like we did in the first quarter.
�I think it was a combination of things. I think we
didn�t execute as well, we had some stupid penalties and they�ve got good
players, too. But I don�t think it�s anything we can�t get corrected.��
The Mountaineers visit East Carolina for a 4:30 p.m.
kickoff on Saturday. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
New Jersey will test prep players for steroids
New Jersey will be the first state in the nation to
test high school athletes for steroids, and the program will use the same
company that tests NCAA student-athletes and minor league baseball players,
according to a report at
ncaa.org.
The random testing will begin at New Jersey State
Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA)-sponsored tournaments during
playoff competition this fall.
The majority of the testing will be in the sports of
football, wrestling, track and field, lacrosse, baseball and swimming �
sports deemed susceptible to steroid use by the NJSIAA. About 500 of the
10,000 athletes who participate in tournaments each year will be tested.
ECU
women's soccer falls 1-0 to Penn
The East Carolina women's soccer team fell to Penn
1-0 in a physical, low-scoring game on Sunday afternoon at Bunting Field in
Greenville, according to an ECU media relations release.
ECU (4-4-0) created numerous scoring opportunities
but it was the Quakers who were able to break through with a goal off the
foot of freshman forward Jessica Fuccello at 81:58.
The scoreless first half featured a combined 10
fouls as each team tried to force its style of play. The Lady Pirates
out-shot Penn 7-0 in the half but could not put the ball past Quaker
goalkeeper Cailly Carroll. ECU's best scoring chance occurred in the 41st
minute when Sarah Kirkley blistered a shot off the crossbar.
