Memphis ousts defensive coordinator Dunn
Memphis football coach Tommy West announced today at
his weekly press luncheon that defensive coordinator Joe Lee Dunn had been
relieved of his coaching duties with the Tigers, according to a release on
the Memphis athletic website. Dunn had served in the post since the spring
of 2003.
"I want to thank Coach Dunn for the contributions he
made in the three years that he was here," West stated. "I think he was a
big part of our success but I have a responsibility to my boss (Athletic
Director R.C. Johnson) and our team to do what I feel is the right thing. I
like Joe Lee as a person. This is a business decision by me. I didn't feel
that at this time we were moving forward on the defensive side of the ball.
When I feel that way and I can't be positive about what we are doing, then
I've got to make changes.
"Again, I appreciate what Joe Lee did while he was
here. This decision was based on a confidence issue about our system."
Dunn, who had served as defensive coordinator for
the Tigers from 1989-91 under Chuck Stobart, returned to Memphis after
serving in the same capacity at Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Mississippi State in
the late 1990's.
"I will take over our defense right now and will
remain in that role until the end of this season," said West. "Obviously
this is not a good situation, but we do have two weeks before we play our
next game. That's not enough time to put in a defensive system, but it is
enough time to put in a defensive plan for that game."
The Tigers are coming off a 35-20 loss at East
Carolina in which Memphis had six turnovers and lost a 20-7 lead.
"This is not a decision based on the East Carolina
game," West added. "This is a decision based on philosophies and kind of how
we have been playing for awhile."
ECU's Kasey Ross earns C-USA weekly honor
East Carolina senior cornerback Kasey Ross was named
Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week today for his play against
Memphis Saturday, according to a release from the ECU athletic media
relations office.
Ross, a native of Alachua, FL, led the Pirates with
a career-high eight tackles, seven of which were solo, and spearheaded a
unit which forced six Memphis turnovers during ECU's 35-20 C-USA win over
the Tigers.
With 1:33 left in the game, Ross picked up his
fourth career interception when he stepped in front of a Martin Hankins pass
at the ECU 23-yard line and returned it 77 yards for a touchdown to secure
the Pirates' win.
Also credited with one pass breakup, Ross keyed a
defense that posted a second-half shutout, limiting the Tigers to just 80
total yards of offense in the third and fourth quarters combined.
Ross joined Co-Offensive Players of the Week Damion
Fletcher (Southern Miss running back) and Matt Forte (Tulane running back),
and Special Teams Player of the Week Darren McCaleb (Southern Miss Kicker)
as C-USA honorees.
The Pirates will be back in action this Saturday
when they host No. 4 West Virginia at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium at 4:30 p.m.
(EDT).
Sept. TV calendar filling up for C-USA teams
Conference USA has announced three television
updates for games on Saturday, Sept. 30.
The game between No. 15 Tennessee and Memphis will
air on ESPN with a noon kickoff at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. It was
also announced that ESPNU will televise Rice's game at Army that same day.
Kickoff for the contest in West Point will be 3:30 p.m. EDT.
ESPN has also announced that it has added the
Houston at Miami (FL) game to its broadcast schedule on that day. The
Cougars-Hurricanes contest will kickoff at 6:00 p.m. EDT at the Orange Bowl
and will air on ESPN2. The changes give C-USA four nationally-televised
games on Sept. 30, as CSTV will air Tulane's long-awaited return to the
Louisiana Superdome at 7:30 p.m. EDT that evening versus Southern Methodist.
C-USA will have a total of nine nationally-televised
games over the next two Saturdays, with a key conference game between
Southern Miss and Central Florida airing in-between those Saturdays. ESPN2
will televise the Golden Eagles-Golden Knights East Division battle on
Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 7:30 p.m. EDT.
East Carolina's home game with No. 4 West Virginia
on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 4:00 p.m. EDT, will be televised on ESPN2.
