Pirate baseball competes to get in shape
The East Carolina baseball
team completed its annual Fire of Blackbeard Challenge last week as the
2006 fall practice schedule came to an end, according to a report on the
ECU athletic media relations Web site.
Mike Flye, Trent Ashcraft,
Brandon Henderson, Broc Sutton and Zach Cooper guided the white team to the
championship.
Coach Billy Godwin and his
staff broke the squad into seven groups and put them through a series of
challenges that tested endurance, strength and teamwork.
"This was another exciting and
fun event for our team," Godwin said. "I am pleased with the results and
strides that we have made during the fall semester. Our players are faster
and stronger right now more than they were a year ago, and all of that is a
credit to the hard work that this team along with coach Nate Barnes
(strength and conditioning) and his staff has put in."
The first day the teams
competed in the vertical jump (Shane Small 36"), broad jump (Ryan Wood
9'7"), pro agility shuttle (Broc Sutton 4.12), 60-yard dash (Trent Ashcraft
6.55) and 300-yard shuttle (Chris Powell 44.56).
On day two, the the teams
headed inside to the Murphy Center for strength tests in squat (Kyle Roller
500 lbs), dead lift (Kyle Roller 575 lbs), dumb-bell (60 lbs) bench press
(Chris Powell 40) and pull-ups (Harrison Eldridge 35).
The final day of competition
saw all seven teams wake-up at 5:00 am to participate in the obstacle
course. Each team had to complete a series of challenges in which they
carried medicine bags and weights, pulled weights on a sled for 50 yards,
climbed up and over hurdles, ran around cones and then ran stadium steps at
Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. The team with the best time received 300 points to
add to its cumulative score from the first two days.
The winning team was announced
at the team banquet which was held at the Murphy Center in the Jones Room.
Former Pirate assistant coach George Whitfield and former Louisburg head
coach Russ Frazier served as guest speakers.
Holy Toledo! Green Wave's search over
Bob Toledo is Tulane's new
football coach, according to a report on the Conference USA website. He
becomes the 37th head football coach in school history.
Toledo, 60, brings more than
30 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Green Wave football team,
including head coaching stints at Cal-Riverside (15-6 with two championships
from 1974-75), the University of the Pacific (14-30 from 1979-82) and UCLA
(1996-2002). He has coached in 13 bowl games during his career, including
seven of the traditional New Year's Day bowls.
Arizona State fills football coaching void
Dennis Erickson, a
two-time national champion (1989 and 1991), a two-time winner of
the Pac 10 coach of the year award (1988 and 2000) and the
Sporting News national coach of the year in 2000, has been named
the 22nd football coach at Arizona State, according to the
university's athletic website.
His 148 wins ranks him 12th
among active coaches.
